THE VINEYARDS
In 2002, David and Betsy Lawer took a chance on a neglected vineyard in a private, peaceful 60-acre valley. Through some elbow grease and an eye for its potential, The Lawers and their talented vineyard management team have transformed the site into a place like no other. With the help of our unique hillside slopes, warm days, cool nights and dedicated, experienced winemakers, Lawer Estates crafts bold, memorable wines, from flavorful Cabernet Sauvignons to classic Viogniers. THE TERROIR
Great wine starts in the vineyard. That’s why we’ve set our roots in Franz Valley. The Lawer Estates vineyard benefits from the rich, volcanic tufa from the surrounding hills that has been deposited in our valley for centuries. A volcanic bowl under the vineyard collects water from winter rains, hydrating the vines during dormancy so they are healthy and ready to produce premium grapes in the spring. Every afternoon, a cool maritime breeze drifts to our vineyard through a gap in the hills, cooling the vines and our hot summer days to create the perfect flavor and acidity in our wines. Our special volcanic terrain, hillside slopes and one-of-a-kind climate produce distinctive, premium grapes that you’ll note in every sip of our wines.
